GARDEN OF LOVE

GARDEN OF LOVE

Enclosed garden is derived from a simple need to protect property. In the Middle Ages, the fence could be made of wicker, wood or masonry - like at monasteries. Such a fenced garden was also a metaphor for Paradise, Eden. It was a symbol of spiritual piety in medieval art. The garden was also used as a place for many love stories. The poem "Romance of the Rose" takes place in a walled garden, by the river, in spring. History describes how these erotic and spiritual love combine into a complex emotional expression that is "... passionate and disciplined, human and transcendent." This dynamic, sometimes contradictory connection between wild or "passionate" and cultivated or "disciplined" nature is something that every garden will know. The gardens that started the medieval monastery evolved into Italian Renaissance gardens, the French Baroque, and culminated in English country estates, such as Heligan House in Cornwall, one of the locations of the SS 2019 campaign. HIGH Spring Summer 2019 is a garden with many rooms, a magical labyrinth of patterns, colors and textures ready for exploration.
